One Great Block: Cape Town’s Woodstock
Our favorite shopping day in Cape Town centers around two great artisanal markets in the neighborhood of Woodstock, The Old Biscuit Mill and the Woodstock Exchange. By a great stroke of luck, they are only a stroll apart. Here are some of our favorites stops within them.
B102, The Woodstock Exchange, 66 Albert Rd, Woodstock, Cape Town, 7915, South Africa
Woodstock is the creative heart of Cape Town, filled with galleries, studios, street art, and artsy types galore. The Woodstock Exchange is a hub for the design set, home to a rotating legion of furniture shops, coffee shops, and furniture shops combined with coffee shops. Because, why not? Right when you enter the space, you’ll be greeted by this mammoth sculpture of a sleeping dog. Proceed with caution: this doesn’t look like the kind of guy you’d want to wake up.
Abode’s clean, bright interior is filled with a wonderland of craft and design pieces—made by local designers across the country—that range from quirky to whimsical. Find lamps and mirrors made from up-cycled construction materials, housewares for your most aesthetically-inclined friend, and a rainbow of notebooks and framed prints. Just be sure to bring an extra bag to carry it all home!
373 Albert Rd, Woodstock, Cape Town, 7925, South Africa
A compelling reason to be in Cape Town on a weekend morning (especially Sunday, if you want to eat your way through the food-focused Oranjezicht City Farm Market, too) is the dynamic Neighbourgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill in up-and-coming Woodstock. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., hip locals and tourists alike weave their way through what can only be described as an abundance of all things artisanal—edible, wearable, and otherwise. The most jam-packed part of the market is usually the massive tent lined with vendors specializing in mushrooms, bread, paella, pizza, honey, cakes, cheeses, and craft brews. It’s a veritable smorgasbord, so wear your stretchy pants, and work it off afterward by strolling the other section devoted to micro-merchants selling baby moccasins, brightly colored swimwear, offbeat home accessories, recycled brass jewelry, and more.
